Bears and Boats

Overnight Bear Viewing Experience:

Close your eyes and imagine what it would be like to wake up from a good night’s sleep right in the heart of Bear Country!  Grab a cup of coffee or tea and walk out onto the observation deck of our 100’ vessel anchored a few hundred yards from the beach.  Watch a momma bear teach her cubs how to forage the kelp along the shore or see big boars battle it out in a quest for dominance.  This is not just a daydream!  Destination Alaska owns multiple turboprop floatplanes and the M/V Peregrine that makes these adventures a reality. Bright and early, you’ll check in at our Beluga Lake office and prepare for a floatplane ride down the spectacular coastline of Katmai National Park where you’ll land in one of its secluded bays or coves.  Your captain, crew, and guides will be anchored and anxiously awaiting your arrival.  Once you settle into your stateroom, we’ll assemble the group up in galley for safety brief and a review of your itinerary for the next 4 nights and 5 days.  Each morning, you will enjoy a hearty breakfast before venturing off with your guide for a day long photo safari.  Clear your camera cards!  You are going to need the space!  Big bears, little bears, scrawny bears, and fat bears are seen in record numbers fishing for spawning salmon, digging clams, eating sedge grasses, and sleeping the warm sun on the beach.  You’ll walk safely with your guide amongst these giants of the north and see them doing amazing bear things in their natural environment.  Late afternoon, board the skiff and head back to the Peregrine for a hot shower, and a home cooked meal.  Let the relaxing begin!  We have an onboard hot tub ready and waiting for those sore muscles.  Throughout your stay, the captain and guides will discuss pulling anchor and heading to different areas to give you the best bear viewing opportunities. Locations that offer spectacular bear viewing include Geographic Harbor, Kukak Bay, Kinak Bay, and Hallo Bay.  If you love photographing bears while enjoying the warm, dry comforts of home, this trip is for you!  It’s only offered for select weeks throughout the summer so don’t wait too long to book!  See you soon!
